Ikoyi is the most expensive and affluent environment in Lagos state, south western Nigeria and you will find one of the most expensive hotels in Ikoyi, just as you will find hotels in Victoria Island to be equally expensive and standard.
The city is situated on the island bordered to the west by the Lagos Island and to the northeast by Obalende. It is located at Eti-osa local government area (Eti-osa which loosely means by the Lagoon or at the edge of the lagoon).
The city was previously a continuation of the Lagos Island, till the British government separated them by building a narrow strip of water. Presently, the canal that separated both areas has been filled and built over. The area developed during the British colonial government when they built the area as a residential cantonment for the expatriate British community.
After independence, Dodan Barracks located on the Island served as the residence of most military rulers. Till date, some of the upscale buildings the British built can still be found on the Island and the residents are those high up on the social strata. Ikoyi is mostly a residential area and the great architectural structures built by the residence can actually be a tourist attraction. However, it is still referred to as the business tourism area of Lagos state. It has a lot of boutique, high scale stores, affluent hotels and the likes.
The Island also boasts of some other organisations like Google Nigeria, headquarters of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Lagos Preparatory School, regarded as Africa's most highly accredited British school and many more office developments.
Ikoyi is home to different social clubs and recreational centres such as the Ikoyi club, Lagos Polo club, Eleko beach, the Lagos Motor Boat Club, Ember creek and many more attractive areas that one is bound to enjoy.
The hotels are as expensive as the area but they are mostly built with state of art facilities, so if affluence is your choice, Ikoyi is the place to go.
