Book a hotel in Kano city today and enjoy the feel of the ancient city of the capital of North Western Nigeria. The city, which is the second largest city in the country after Lagos, is the commercial heart of Northern Nigeria.
As a matter of fact, the slogan of the whole state is "centre of commerce." The advent of Kano can be traced to one of the seven sons of Bayyajida – the said progenitor of the Hausas – that he had with the queen of Daura. In 1903, despite a small resistance, Kano fell to the British.
It replaced Lokoja as the administrative centre of Northern Nigeria, before it moved to Zungeru and then Kaduna. However, it remained a significant city in the country because of its high production in groundnut. Kano was known for the famous groundnut pyramids, which was one of the reasons a railway was built from Kano to Lagos by the British. Although the large groundnut pyramid has dwindled, there are still other sources of income for the city. For instance, leather works, crafts, tie and dye, textile, trade in agricultural products like grains, peanuts, cotton, among others also serve to garner income for the city.
Also, the number of different businesses that goes on in the large markets around the city is also a large source of income for Kano. Just like Kaduna and most parts of Northern Nigeria, some of the delicacies in Kano include Tuwon shinkafa da miyar taushe, waina, gurasa among others.
The city boasts of many historical and attraction centres such as Tiga dam, a beautiful body of water where visitors can go on boat cruise or fish; horse riding at Durbar, biennial ceremony hosted by the Emir to celebrate the two Sallah celebrations; Rock Castle Hotel, built beside Tiga dam in 1960 to host the queen of England and her entourage; the Emir's palace; Kurmi market, oldest public market in Northern Nigeria; Kano walls; Audu Bako zoological garden, Kofar mate dyeing pit; Dala Hills, where the first settlers in the city settled; Falgore Game Reserve; Gidan Makama Museum, which served as the former Emir's palace but now serves as a museum for Kano history, Buturiya wetlands game reserve and many more.
The city is cheap compared to other big cities like it, so hotels are affordable but also cater to comfort and style.
